The Off Season
October 25, 2018
The NBA is back and so am I! Last week marked the beginning of the 2018-19 NBA season and it was a good one. We have seen some changes in the NBA landscape and of course a lot of it has to do with what went down in the off season. The off season can impact the regular season greatly. It can be the difference between a good year and a not so good year. That is why what you do in the off season is just as important if not more important than what you do during the regular season.
The off season is a time for players to take a moment to regroup after a long and grueling regular season. It is no small feat going through an 82-game season, plus playoffs (for those who make it). It not only takes a toll on you physically, but mentally and emotionally as well.
Basketball players aren't the only ones who have it tough though. We all have our seasons to get through and every season we need to have an off season. My off season consisted of travel and reevaluating my post-grad life. Deciding what I want to do, who I want to be, and where I want to go in life. While that can't all be said and done in one moment, it was a great starting point.
We should all have a period of time where we take a moment to regroup. It doesn't have to be months long, it can be any amount of time you feel you need but, we should definitely make the effort to take the time. Your off season can be your time to relax, you can use it to evaluate your life, or you can use it to put in work to better yourself. Most NBA players combine these things, relaxing after a long season, figuring out what they want in terms of their basketball career, and working out to become a better player.
Just like a professional athlete we have a responsibility to ourselves to be the best at what we do. No matter what it is in life always aim to be the best you can be. While every day is an opportunity to grow and learn and become the best version of yourself, the bulk of the work comes in the off season when no one is watching and there may seem to be no motivation. Regardless of that, have your off season and make the best of it. The regular season will be here before you know it and we can always tell who had a good off season and who didn't.
