The National Basketball Association (NBA) shows us that basketball is more than just a game, by giving back through its NBA Cares initiative. The NBA works to create an image that is more than a collective body of selfish, rich, irresponsible athletes. Through NBA Cares, we can see a different side of the NBA and its players than we normally do.
There are often many misconceptions about major sports leagues and professional athletes that tend to be negative. However, the NBA and its players and organizations commit to various amounts of community service and charity work. Some players even take it upon themselves to start their own foundations, donate or give time to charities, or participate in the league’s very own NBA Cares program.
NBA Cares is the league’s global social responsibility program that takes the NBA’s mission to another level by addressing important social issues in the United States and around the world. NBA Cares works in conjunction with youth-serving programs that are internationally-recognized and support education, youth and family development, and health-related causes.
Since NBA Cares’ launch in 2005, the league and teams have raised more than millions of dollars for charity, millions of hours of hands-on service, and built numerous places for kids and families to live, learn or play in communities around the world. NBA Cares is built on a foundation of strong partnerships with community organizations, positively impacting lives around the world. Its business partners have joined the organization to support projects and activities that better the world. This time of year, giving is always a central theme. NBA Cares is an inspiring example of what it means to give. The organization is dedicated to making our communities better and serving those communities in a variety of ways. We should all follow the lead of this organization and take the time to give back in some way. Donate time, money, or resources but, no matter what you do contribute somewhere it is needed. Let’s make a concerted effort to not only give during the holidays, but all year round. It doesn’t always have to be monetary, compassion and kindness go a long way. Start with this holiday season and continue giving all year round. To learn more about NBA Cares, what they do, and to get inspired to give back visit http://cares.nba.com/.
