As we wrap up the first week of the new year it is only right to discuss this topic. In 2016, we saw the retirements of NBA greats such as Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, and Kevin Garnett, each of whom dedicated several years to the game of basketball. All drafted in the 90’s, each quickly made a significant impact on the league through their transcendent play. These players took the league by storm each becoming all-stars, champions, and players whom we have the right to call future Hall of Famers. As we come to terms with the end of their careers, we have to ask ourselves is this an end of an era or a new beginning? Well, if you know anything about these players it is never the end; they are always looking ahead ready to make their next move. Kobe Bryant has left the game of basketball behind, but he is still making moves with his company Kobe Inc. Kevin Garnett has taken his on-court persona to television in his new show Area 21 and Tim Duncan who has never been quite as public as the aforementioned, as far as we know is enjoying the retired life. Though all on different paths they have one thing in common, a new beginning.
Let’s look at 2017 not as the end of 2016, but the start of a new beginning. Just as most ball players whose careers end they move on to new things, whether it be broadcasting, business ventures, coaching, or even just leading a normal life they had not experienced in the many years they spent playing the game. We should follow the example of these people. Just because a certain point in our life ends does not mean we end. Make 2017 your year, a new beginning, another 365 days to tackle greatness. Take chances, make the best of your opportunities, and venture into new territories. I myself am doing so with this blog. I am sharing my thoughts and doing something outside of my comfort zone; I am starting my new beginning. I hope you all will do the same. In life we do not really have endings, but continuations of what we previously started. Continue your journey and look forward to what has yet to come. Will this year be an end of an era for you or a new beginning?
